What Does a Chiropractor Do?

Chiropractic treatment focuses on the spinal cord relationship to bodily functions.   The spinal cord is the system of nerves that carries messages throughout the body.  The nervous system regulates every cell in the body.  When the spinal cord is injured or unhealthy, the communication lines are cut to various parts of the body contributing to pain and discomfort.

Proper functioning of the spine, joints, bones, and muscles relies on a healthy nervous system.

The goal of chiropractic treatment is a healthy and properly functioning spine, allowing the body to heal naturally.

A healthy spine can be achieved through proper spinal alignment and nutrition.  In addition to spinal manipulation, a chiropractor employs muscle therapy, exercises, and nutritional assistance.

What Kind of Training Does a Chiropractor Receive?

For a little bit of history:  Chiropractic founder Daniel David Palmer engaged in scientific research for years and was well educated in anatomy and physiology.  Through his vast studies, Palmer had learned that older cultures had successfully performed spinal manipulations, but the methodology was virtually unknown to the West.    In 1895 Palmer performed a chiropractic adjustment on a janitor, who claimed as a result, that his hearing was restored.   Encouraged by the success of this spinal manipulation, Palmer worked to further formulate and codify the science and method of chiropractic.  He established the first school of Chiropractic in 1897 in Davenport, Iowa to disseminate his research and workability of technique to others.   The school was named Palmer school of Cure and is now known as the Palmer College of Chiropractic.

While spinal adjustments were not new to the world, (they had been used for 100s, perhaps 1000s of years), Palmer introduced chiropractic to the modern west through his academy.  The profession and its advocates have continued to grow in popularity over the last 100 years.  There are 20 Chiropractic Schools in the United States and 20 more across the globe.

A chiropractor is well trained.  Undergraduate studies include biology, chemistry, physics, and psychology.  Typically, chiropractors graduate with a pre-med major before attending four years of a chiropractic graduate program.

Chiropractic College is a rigorous four-year program that includes courses in biochemistry, anatomy, pathology, orthopedics and chiropractic principles.   A year-long internship takes place in hospitals or clinics.

Most practitioners train for additional certification in fields such as sports medicine and nutrition in addition to the required courses in the Chiropractic graduate program.

Today there are 70,000 chiropractors in the United States, according to acatoday. Org.
