Dear Future Doc: Please Boost My Immunity!
Dear Future Doc, Do you help with sinus infections? A few times a year (including right now) I get really under the weather with mucus’y pain all over my upper body. I have chest congestion where my lungs feel completely full and it’s definitely not air. I’ve also been coughing and sneezing a lot recently and this follows with strong sinus pressure above and between my eyes ..and behind my nose. Not always but sometimes headaches are associated with this and all I want to do is lay down. I take over the counter medication to relieve the symptoms but it doesn’t last long. I know you’re a chiropractor but on facebook I’ve seen a lot of information come out of your office about boosting immunity. Please help me out if you can. Yours truly, Jeff P. (30 y/o. Oak Hill, WV)
Dear Jeff, My quick answer to your question regarding allergy and sinus infections… absolutely yes, something can be done about it, naturally! I have discovered that there are as many reasons/causes for the symptoms as there are people that suffer from them.
In general, sinus cavities in the body serve as toxic load “pressure valves,” such that when the body had accumulated too many toxins and/or waste products, they are then forced into the sinus cavity. This makes the sinus an ideal area for infectious organisms. Although mucous secretion is an unpleasant symptom, it’s an intelligent body response to surround and control organisms.
I’ve had many patients report that often after being on a health improvement program at my practice that they no longer get their “usual” or seasonal sinus infections, even though their improvement plan did not specifically “treat” the sinuses. In these cases, the remedy was simply nutritional support that enabled the body to better detox. By supporting the primary detox pathways such as the liver, kidneys, and bowel, the toxic load is reduced, at least to the extent that the toxic overload to sinus “pressure valves”is no longer necessary.
In some patients the frontal or maxillary sinus areas directly test as a priority to handle and may require specific nutritional support. In these situations the answer is most often homeopathic and/or herbal drainage remedies followed by common immune boosting measures for the offending infectious organism.
Additionally Jeff, in any situation that involves an immune challenge in any part of the body it’s very important to not “feed the bugs.” That would include most dairy products and sugars, including the “healthy” fruit juices.
Furthermore, as I mentioned earlier, there are as many causes for sinus issues as there are people who suffer from them. Each case is different and therefore each case may require a unique nutritional handling.
