Future Doc: Is This You? By Dr. Tim Pence
In my previous Future Doc article, I introduced the four major ways in which the body deposits potential energy (body fat). The different body types reflect diverse underlying hormonal imbalances. In order for healthy weight loss to occur, the underlying hormonal endocrin imbalances need to be handled. This is accomplished differently for each body type. However the starting point for tapping into the potential energy stores and burning fat is essentially the same for each body type. First, clean and support the liver. Second, avoid spikes in insulin.
The liver is the hub of metabolic activity and all fat burning hormones work directly or indirectly through it. When liver function is sluggish, the fat burning hormones cannot adequately reach the fat deposits to burn off the potential energy. Livers get lethargic when repeatedly exposed to toxins generated within or outside the body. Example toxins are highly processed foods, drugs , alcohol medications, and environmental toxins. To avoid unpleasant symptoms, a liver detox is best done gradually and that gradient is different for each individual. This is one reason why a professionally tailored and monitored nutritional program is recommended.
Avoid insulin spikes. Insulin is a hormone made and secreted by the pancreas. Its primary action is to reduce the amount of glucose circulating in the blood (blood sugar). Normally, a proper diet results in a gradual and relatively low rise of blood sugar after ingestion. However, diets containing high amounts of carbohydrates (refined grains, starches, sweets, alcohol) quickly break down into glucose and thus cause a rapid and high rise in blood sugar. The body, in turn, produces a spike in insulin to handle the excess glucose resulting in rollercoaster levels of blood sugar and insulin. The spikes in insulin cause ripples throughout the entire endocrine system resulting in relative hormonal imbalances. These periods may last for several hours to several days during which fat burning is virtually impossible.
