DEAR FUTURE DOC: SORE SHOULDER BLADE
Dear Future Doc,
In the past few weeks, I’ve been experiencing soreness in my shoulder blade area around my scapula. In an at home attempt to fix the ache I’ve exercised the shoulder blade area more regularly through strength training (pushups, planks) and stretching. I’m not sure why it’s not getting any better and maybe even getting worse! I’m 29, have good posture, exercise regularly, and am at a healthy weight: 130lbs and 5’ 5”. Would your chiropractic services fix this issue? – Karen D. Beckley, WV.
Hello Karen,
First of all, thank you for the question. I must first answer that question with my canned response….“anything can cause anything”! This meaning that there are many factors that may be present and contributing to your shoulder issue…(such as the 5 common stressors). That being said, I have helped many people with complaints of shoulder pain and related areas in the upper extremity. Most of these cases had spinal misalignment in the neck area….some with neck pain and some without neck pain. The nerves that exit from the spinal cord in the neck area supply the shoulder and the muscles that move the shoulder. An “out of whack” spine in the neck can weaken or alter the muscles and joints and lead to dysfunction and pain. Thus, any upper extremity (shoulder, elbow, arm, wrist, hand, finger) problem may potentially be helped by Chiropractic treatment. A thorough Chiropractic evaluation is highly recommended to determine whether your shoulder condition is related to the spine and if any other factors might also be contributing to and/or causing your condition. – Dr. Timothy Pence, ie.
